The evergreen team topic: communication

Communication is at the very top of teams’ wish lists.

It can be frustrating: again and again – everywhere you go, communication remains a key challenge for teams and organisations.
It’s a constant balancing act: more? less? what? how?
“It should have been communicated better!”
We have all said or heard that so many times.

Let’s take a look at this evergreen topic through the Code18 lens:
Communication is one of the 18 factors we measure with the Code18 survey for teams. It’s the fluid glue that strengthens relational power.

Right at the top of the wish list! Among all factors, communication shows the biggest gap between the current state and the desired state, according to the last 50 teams analyzed by Code18. On average, teams wish for almost +50% more communication.

A survey of 1,000 HR professionals in the UK by Michael Page confirms this trend -“communication” was the most in-demand soft skill in 2023.

Code18 has found two key correlations between communication and team performance:

The right dose of communication matters:
More is not always better. When communication is overdosed, team performance drops. Silence isn’t golden either – too little communication also reduces team performance.

Team constellation is crucial:
All with the same communication energy? Not good! We call this an Angel constellation-too harmonious.
All with very different communication styles? Also not good! We call this a Devil constellation-too different.
