May the best team win! The last few days and weeks, the headlines have been full of stories about the multi-million-dollar soccer squads that were kicked out early, the superstars who couldn’t save the team, and the outsiders who won the crowd’s hearts, and also proved themselves on the field.

The World Cup raises many questions.The discussions around teams include brand, mentality, identity, and team chemistry.

In light of these stories, I would like to share an inspiring conversation I had a few weeks ago with Patrick Tobler from Code18 AG. He shared how his background and experience in corporate controlling and strategic development have led him to some critical conclusions:

⚽ You can only win when you start gathering team data – a controller’s dream.
⚽ Measurement is the starting point for reflection on current state, strategic options, and decision-making.
⚽ The team level is the black whole of work and performance optimisation.
⚽ The future of management lies in measuring and understanding human systems, not only individual performance.

It is fascinating what we are now able to do with the help of AI: gather, analyse, and interpret data; design teams; and even predict team outcomes.

But there is one crucial element to keep in mind:
Performance remains a human game
..data is the enabler.
