Teams,

Seeing and being seen

Your CV is a way of being seen.

The HBS article about discrimination of minority applicants, which I posted in the comments, is somewhat dated, but since it was recently brought up to me in relation to a search on diversity, I’d like to revisit the topic from a slightly different angle than you might expect.

Yes, it is shocking that applicant discrimination was still happening 5 years ago & let’s be sure it’s still happening today.

But what else is happening and what can we do?

In one way or another, all of us are “whitening”- not fully embracing our heritage, choices, or experiences.

I frequently speak with and encounter professionals who:

  • Remove certain experiences from their CVs because they don’t seem impressive
  • Wish for different experiences:
    • Those with a straightforward career path often wish they had lived or tried more.
    • Those with a more diverse career wish they had followed a more direct path.
  • Add experiences to their CVs that they haven’t truly made.

All with the intent of being seen-in a certain way.

All of us want to be seen. But only when we see ourselves in a more holistic light, embracing all facets – emotional, spiritual, and every experience & choice – can we truly be seen by others, and our real value will surface.

INTEGration ultimately leads to INTEGrity and automatically silences discrimination. We truly are co-creators.

Everything we do for ourselves; we also do for the rest.

So what can do is to take a closer look &

  • Stop discriminating ourselves based on our heritage, choices, or past experiences
  • Embrace and integrate the experiences that don’t appear on our CV but have profoundly shaped who we are
  • Show genuine interest in others beyond what’s on their CV

We have more potential to be seen when we show up as our true selves, even though it feels vulnerable at times.

Our mentoring ~HORIZON – leading intuitively yourself & others~ supports individuals to recognise their value beyond positions & resumes.
